Why do people have "stuff"? They collect objects and often place emotional attachment to them. I fail to understand why this happens, even though I do it. Maybe it's the computer that you just can't live without, maybe it's your collection of vintage cornflake boxes. It could be a bunch of rocks. Surely we don't need so many things. Houses wouldn't need to be large because a larger house is meant for lots of objects, and without them, the house is too empty. Odd how people perceive things. Is it a symbol of wealth or rank to have many things? We don't use the majority of the items we own once a month, let alone on a daily basis.
Books, we read them how often? Are they worth the space they take up? We have them to "reference" or because it may be a book we really like. But how often can you read the same book?
Papers, bills, documents, receipts... all the things we feel we need to keep, again, for reference or proof.
Videos, music, magazines.... all the things that can be accessed through a computer and take up no physical space. Yet, this creates an even greater dependance on the computer. Which, in turn creates more dependence on electricity to survive, causing such disasters as blackouts to be catastrophic.
Tools, supplies... for the handiman. For the mechanic, the engineer. These are their trade. But fabric... ugh. takes up far too much room.
Clothing. Why do people have so much clothing? For sanitation? Social positioning? Practicality? So many reasons I am given, and yet I am not satisfied with the answers. People go to the store and buy cheap clothing, to be used and thrown away. (Kinda kills my job, but whatever) Then there are those who buy practically and only purchase again when the clothing has deteriorated. And then there are the fashion goddesses who wear insanely expensive articles of clothing only once. (Yay! I shan't starve on the streets!) What's the point?
Why do we own so many gadgets and garments and items and objects and funriture and junk?! Perhaps this is why buying a house is such a big deal. Why moving to a new place is such an important decision. Because then we have to think of all our stuff. We have to think, "Will my stuff be safe here?", "What am I going to do with all this stuff?", "I need stuff to move my stuff with."
But maybe the big deal with moving is that you are leaving familiar territory, that you're about to experience someplace/something new. Oooooooh. Scary. And it will be. But everyone knows how that goes.
